The Championships were part of the Centenary Olympics Jubilee Regatta in Nynäshamn and formed the final of this fantastic event. It started with classics and several of the yachts which participated in the Olympics already in 1912 took part and there were also other championships and races in between. 37 Dragons, whereof one from USA and three from Denmark, participated in this 62nd Swedish Dragon Championship (this year becoming Swedish Champion was again not restricted to Swedish participants).
The weather was stable and the winds quite light on the first day which meant that only two races could be completed, but this was repaired as the weather became excellent for racing and all six races could be completed during the Championship. In the lead after the first day was SWE 323 Linda with Stefan Löhr at the helm. Last day SWE 369 Lumme with Olle Jo Johansson, Patrik Salén and Staffan Salén won two of the remaining four races and became Swedish Champions 2012. Second was USA 1 Rat Pack with Ivan Bradbury at the helm and in third place SWE 358 Sweet Alice with Hans Liljeblad.
As this year’s Championship was part of the Olympics Jubilee Regatta the social arrangements were even more enjoyable than usual. Olle Jo and his colleagues in Lumme were celebrated significantly and the well conducted races and favourable sailing conditions made the atmosphere during all the social arrangements very good and pleasant as we are used to at Dragon events. Now some of the Swedish Dragon sailors are bracing themselves for the Russian Open Championship on 15 – 19 August in Saint Petersburg, a fantastic and interesting City to visit. As always it is a bit uncertain how many will actually take the ferry boat over there. Others are taking a rest in preparation for the Nordic Championships (Audi Dragon Cup Grand Prix 4) on 25 – 26 August in Båstad.
